I have been in a relationship for a year. My fiance and I have decided to give our lives to Christ and we are still in the early learning stages. We have decided to obstain from sex (repenting from our sin) and we are confused as to what constitutes marriage in the eyes of God. From what I know (and it’s not much) the marriages in the bible were not complete with a marriage license. I can’t find where the marriage was acknowledged by the government in order for God to accept. The reason I ask is that we want to get married in the eyes of God and we are wondering if it is against the bible if we went before a man/woman of God and said our vows but did not go forth with the legal/government licensing, would we still be married in God’s eyes? Also was it God or man that said legally changing your name is required. Please don’t get me wrong, I understand when you are married, you become one. I just want clarification on what God said and what was later added by man…

A man and a woman are both US citizens. The man leaves and moves to Brazil. He becomes a Brazilian citizen. The woman goes to Brazil and gets married to him there – no marriage license is filed in the US. They have an existing joint bank account in the US. He has property and accounts in Brazil, and she has property and accounts in the US. What becomes joint marital property and what legally stays separate? And what if they decide to get divorced – are they entitled to any of the property or assets that is in the other person’s name (such as money in bank accounts, home, retirement fund?)

I’ve been with my boyfriend for a few months now. He recently revealed to me that he has a common law marriage under his belt that he has yet to rectify through a divorce. The female party has agreed to the necessary legal actions and we are all looking to take care of this as quickly and quietly as possible.

There was no relationship and the marriage was never consumated. They never lived together or accumulated any assets.
No children involved.
No changes to last name.
Taxes still filed individually. No joint finances in any regard.
They were under the influence at the time and were only married 17 days before they both spent time behind bars. (Just over a year combined).

Does the jail time count as legal separation? Are they eligible for an anulment? With ABSOLUTELY NO assets/properties/children/last name changes/joint taxes/ etc., how long should a no-contest/no-fault divorce take in PA under these circumstances? Also, what kind of money will it take?

Or, at the very least when will he have papers in hand to prove he is divorced or on his way to being divorced? Because without papers for proof, being together will be nothing but an enormous emotional hassle from those around me resulting in turmoil until then. Meaning, we can’t be together as we deserve without legal proof of his marital status.

Outside of that, this is question is for legal advice only. Please refrain from lectures about poor personal choices, etc.

THANK YOU!
Common Law may not be the right term. I believe they do have a marriage license. If not, I’m happier than I thought.
All I really need to know is how long should it take start to finish. Can they sign papers and be done or are they still under the "waiting period" of 90 days (in PA)?

P.S. "Fishy" and "Hookie"…oh the irony of those two words being used on this page!

What’s the difference in getting a marriage license and the judge marrying you or do we sign a marriage license when the judge marries you? What does a judge say? I’m planning on getting married this year and have no idea what to do. Please help.

We married in India. To avoid visa complications, we did not register our marriage in India. We decided to come to USA (florida in particular) and register the marriage. I find only details online about marriage license. But we do not have to get married again. We just have to register our marriage here. Please help.

Is it possible to get a prenuptial?

Is it possible to get a prenuptial agreement 6 weeks before marriage? And If we go get our marriage license would the prenup still be valid?

Never issued a marriage license but went to courthouse to make it official for insurance purposes. No kids involved. House is in man’s name only…..woman is fine with him keeping it. Together approx. for 7 years……legally common law via courthouse visit for 2 years. If she changes her mind about the house, could that be an issue?

How does a marriage license work?

We’re getting married in a little over a month and we were told to get the marriage license now. So, if we get it now, what do we need to have with us when we go to get it at the courthouse, and does it mean we’re married after it’s filled out? This may be a dumb question, but I really don’t know, so any answers will help. Thanks!

My grandfather recently pasted away and my grandmother is trying to figure out all the bills, etc. Some places require to see a copy of their marriage license in order to transfer his accounts to her. The problem is my grandfather had hidden the marriage license and our family can’t find it. How do I go about getting a duplicate copy of their marriage license after 54+ years?
(They were married in Michigan and were currently living in North Carolina if that helps anything). Your help is greatly appreciated. Thank you so much!
