Is it possible to get into a physical therapy school if you have a degree in sports medicine?
I want to kown if its is possible to get a degree in sport medicine and then go to graduate school to get a physical therapy degree. I want to go to DePauw and get a sports medicine degree with a minor in athletic training and then go to Indiana to get a physical therapy degree. Could I get in or do I need to go through a physical therapy program? Thanks for any help you can provide.

Anyone with any degree can apply to PT school as long as they have met that school’s prerequisite requirements. Albiet, for time sake, if you choose a major that encompasses most of the prerequisite classes, you’ll be that much better off. Pre-requistie requirements usually include a year and a half of bio, a year of chem, a year of physics, a year and a half of psych, anatomy and physiology, calc or trig, and stats.
You can visit the UI website to see what that school’s particular requirements are. I would also encourage you to explore and apply to other schools as well, as entrance is traditionally very competitive. You can go to the APTA website at: http://www.apta.org to get a list of accredited PT programs.
yes, you can do almost any major and still get into a physical therapy doctorate program, although excercise science or sports medicine are recommended. if you finish undergraduate school with a degree in sports medicine/athletic training, it will put you on the path to physical therapy. just make sure you know that you are getting yourself into a tough courseload. i know my school’s physical therapy doctorate program was 3 years, but all year round, including summer. it is very tough and takes alot of time and effort. and you will not have time to work, so you may want to take a year or two between undergrad and graduate school in order to save up some money.
