I need to know if anyone knows and cheap ways to get a divorce?
I live in Texas and I need to know of a way to get a cheap divorce. Mediation is not going to work because I do not want to be in the same room as him. He is very dangerous and I fear for my life if I ever see him. We have no children together, no land, homes or cars. We have nothing together but debt that is all in my name and I am willing to take care of the debt myself to make an easier divorce. I just want out and away from him as soon as possible. I will add that he continues to say he should have custody of my son which is not his son and I have a paternity test from the father and the father pays child support. So let me know any advice you can give me please. I know every state is usually different so just a reminder I do live in Texas.

Truth…the cheapest and simpliest way to divorce your husband…is to do it yourself. I have done it! I t can be done!
And I did it for about $150.00.
The FIRST place you need to start is at your local magistrates office at the courthouse. Tell them what you want to do and ask them for a photo copy of an "UNCONTESTED" divorce, that you can use as a reference. You will need this because the format and the wording have to be precise. I am even talking about the spacing along the edges and that double vertical line that they have on those offical papers. (Take cash with you, because the copy you request is going to cost you whatever their fee is for copying each page. Ask the clerk there for any additional advice. After your first draft is complete. Take it back to the courthouse and have them review it. They will tell you if it is acceptable for filing or not and tell you what you have to correct before you bring it back. Don’t get discouraged, I had to re-do my draft 3 times before it was acceptable. Make sure you find out fees, like how much it is to file, additional court costs, etc. When you file they will either give you a court date or they will send you one in the mail. (You may even have the option of serving him; by registered mail, yourself or they can have someone from the court house serve him. It think if they send someone, it costs more…but make sure you ask)…the day of court, be clean, be prompt, bring a witness, (and leave any kids with a sitter) you are representing yourself. Pay attention in court to the cases that go before you and you will know what you are to say before you take the stand. It sounds intimidating, but it really is a walk in the park. Your witness will also take the stand and confirm he/she has known you for X number of years and that you and your husband have been apart for X number of years. Your witness has to be somone you both know! Your husband does not have to appear. Just you and your witness.
At this time…when you are on the stand…is the time you Vocally and Verbally, Out loud before God and everybody you have to say…I would also like to request at this time that my maiden name of (insert name here) be restored. You will be dismissed and in 30-90 days will recieve your divorce decree in the mail. CAUTION: Until you recieve those papers, you CANNOT remarry, change your name at DMV, or anything. The court WILL NOT send your Ex a copy of the final divorce decree….you have to do that. I hope that helps.
Disclaimer: I am not an attorney, this is just a synopsis of what I have been through in writing my own divorce and I wish you the best.
go to Las Vegas, 5minutes your done
Divorce is never cheap! Lawyers will always fleece u!
Try Legal Zoom .com, my daughter is using this filing fees are about $250.00 +/- depending on what state your in. Call the court house someone who deals with divorces, and ask to speak to someone who gets paid by the state to represent you, IF you can’t afford a lawyer.
Go to your local library and ask the librarian for assistance. I’m in Michigan, and we have a book "Divorce for Dummies" and others like it that contain all the paperwork required to file for a divorce without an attorney. You file all paperwork yourself. This works best if you have no children/assets and the divorce is amicable.
I really would ask a librarian for assistance. Even if they don’t have the forms you need, they will definaely be able to point you in the right direction.
Good Luck!
File yourself! Get a divorce book (Texas has plenty of them). The books don’t mention this, but file an "Affidavit of Indigency" at the court house when you file your petition to divorce. This will wave the court cost fees. You just have to file your income and your expenses. It’s an easy form to file. I did it.
