How can I find the best divorce attorney without totally breaking the bank?
I’m preparing to file for divorce in Fairfax Co, Northern VA and need to find a really good lawyer.

Ask around and look in the newspaper, phone book or on TV ads. Lots of people have hired lawyers or know of someone who has. Any lawyer will do the best he/she can with the case you provide.
If you plan to be fair, then both of you need to use just one attorney… Look under Divorce, attorney, mediating. Attorneys love it when you get one and your spouse gets one and the two of you have at it in court…. the two of them walk away with all your money, drag it on for years, or until someone wakes up, and you two get next to nothing. If you two agree to sit down, and fairly divide your assets, and go to a mediating attorney, all that guy does is fill in the blanks as you note to him, file, and his fee is $75-300 depending upon the state.
You can get divorce papers off of the internet to give you an idea of what they look like, to shorten your time with him….. the less time of his you use, the cheaper for you both. Attorneys don’t get rich on your $$ if you already have a plan…… which is the only civil way to divorce. It’s only when people get greedy, that you both loose. (and then you both loose big time….)

I don’t know if there is a such thing as "Best", but you need one that’ll work for your interests and do as much as possible to see that you acquire what is rightfully yours.
Divorce can be from fairly simple to extremely messy….depends upon the couple.
Know your enemy (person you are going to divorce) and be prepared. Sometimes it brings out the worst in people when their world begins to crumble. Money talks, BS walks.
Your every emotion and $$ could be tried…so be ready.
It takes a lot of WILL POWER to get through an event as such. Beware that when the going gets rough and things start getting a little delusional through the battle, the strongest party will win in the end.
Keep your head on straight, and stay focused, and get what is due to you.
2nd chances are usually too late…Judges don’t want to see you or anyone else AGAIN……Things get delayed more and more.
So, gird up your loins, get your ammo ready, and be prepared for the worst and you should come out halfway decent. You MUST prevail till its completely over.

I would begin by investigating attorney websites first and foremost. Look and make a informed decision based upon the information on their website which attorneys you will call.
